South Slope awards grants to local non-profit groups

South Slope Cooperative Communications and Aureon are pleased to announce that matching charity grants have been awarded to Optimists Club North Liberty, Safe Haven of Iowa County, North Liberty Fire Department, and Miracles in Motion Therapeutic Equestrian Center. Upon reviewing an abundance of applications, the Aureon Charity Grant Committee delegated funds to projects committed to the betterment of local communities.

South Slope and Aureon awarded the following grants at the South Slope office on June 1, 2018:

Optimists Club of North Liberty will use their grant funds to purchase helmets and lights for their Bicycle Safety Day where knowledgeable volunteers will inspect bikes, teach basic riding skills, give helmets and bike lights to those in need, and provide informational handouts. Nearly 2,400 children attend the five elementary schools in North Liberty and many of those children ride bicycles.

Safe Haven of Iowa County will use their grant funds to purchase a portable anesthesia machine to complete the outfitting of their surgical suite program. The surgical suite has been constructed and outfitted solely by donations and grant awards.

North Liberty Fire Department will use their funds to purchase fire-proof barriers called smoke curtains, which keep smoke from pouring into a hallway when a firefighter opens a door to find and attack a fire.

Miracles in Motion Therapeutic Equestrian Center serves mentally and physically challenged people by allowing them to experience the joy and spirit of horseback riding. Their grant funds will be used to purchase an Equicizer, a piece of equipment that will make evaluating prospective students more realistic and effective.

Grant applications are available at Grants are awarded quarterly and amounts are determined by an independent charity grant committee.
