How to avoid spam and phishing emails
Step-by-step instructions and best practices for protecting your email account from spam and phishing threats. This guide is designed for South Slope customers and provides practical tips to keep your personal information secure.
What is Spam Email?: Unsolicited emails sent to a large number of people hoping that at least a few respond.
What is Phishing Email?: A specific type of spam sent by bad actors to trick you into sharing sensitive information. These attackers impersonate trusted companies to lure you into clicking links or opening attachments. These emails often ask you to update your account, verify your password, or provide billing details.
Remember: We will never ask you to provide sensitive information via email or text.
How to Stay Safe
- Don’t click links or open attachments.
- Verify the sender’s email address. Hover over the “From:” address field with your mouse cursor.
- Look for spelling errors and unusual formatting.
- Access your account through our official website by typing “southslope.com” directly into your browser.
- Report suspicious emails by forwarding them to security@southslope.net, then delete them or move them to spam.
If you have clicked on a suspicious link, you need to change your password. For help doing so contact us or call 319.626.2211.

Notice how this email:
- Uses urgent language “as soon as possible” and a date in the very near future.
- Includes a link labeled [Update Now] urging you to click.
- Claims your account will be interrupted if you don’t act immediately.
- Says it’s from South Slope but isn’t sent from a “@southslope.com” email.
